This procedure was imposed by the 22nd amendment in 1951. Vice-president serves for four-year terms. US House of Representatives serves for two-year terms and U.S. Senator for six-year terms.

The officials of state government have different terms of office according to the procedure is mentioned in the state constitution. But the official term for the state governor is four years for all the states. Except for the states of Vermont and New Hampshire is for, where Governors serve for two years.  

There are 44 states of the lower house of state legislature which have the term of office of two years and 37 states of the upper house of the state legislature which have term office for four years. The territories of the United States and the members of the house also serve for two years term.
