The issue of slavery at the Constitutional Convention was actually an issue about: Representation

At that time, slaves were not considered as a normal citizen. But still the number of the slaves influence the amount of representative that the states could have to represent them in the government. This issue is being discussed in the constitutional convention. Eventually, they agree that slaves would be counted as a three/fifth of a normal citizens.

The issue of slavery at the constitutional convention was an issue about representation. When writing this first constitution of the United States, the northern states and the southern states disagreed about the rule of representation of slaves in the House of Representatives.

Further explanation

This important debate took place in Philadelphia, May 25 to September 17, 1787. The northern did not want the southern to be allowed to count slaves in the total of their population. Because it was the number of inhabitants in a state that determined the number of deputies that a state could send to the House of Representatives. If slaves were counted as free men, the southern states which possessed more slaves than the northern states would have a big advantage. In the end, these states found a solution to this problem by accepting that slave will be counted for only three-fifths of the free man.

baherus [9]

What most historians do is attempt to re-create a historic event to find what probably happened. Since we can't go back in time to see what actually happened in the past, they make scenarios of what they think would happen will all the knowledge that they know. Artifacts also helps them recreate a historic event and get closer to predicting what happened.
