Answer: [SAMPLE ANSWER] Daniel Halladay developed first windmill in America used for pumping water in 1854. The design was adapted to turn with the wind direction, which provided longer functioning time. The windmills pumped water from underground to provide much needed irrigation to the crops in areas that had little access to water otherwise. The windmill made it possible for farmers on the West Texas frontier to successfully grow crops in the dry climate. As irrigation methods improved, more land became available for farming. The prosperity of farmers in this region encouraged others seeking cheap land opportunities to settle in the area as well.
