Sam and Johnny, in the book, The ransom of Red Chief were con-men who resorted to all sorts of illegal activities. Johnny was the son of Ebenezer Dorset who was the next target for kidnapping by the con-men. Johnny was not treated well by his father, so when he was kidnapped he saw it as camping which he enjoyed. Bill was emotionally affected by Johnny's mischief even though he was always playing with him. Sam on the other hand was unaffected by Johnny's actions.
