This mountain range runs through the central part of the country, being parallel with the stretching of the western and eastern coastlines. Because it is the most marking feature in the peninsula, the peninsula got its name after it. The Apennines are very long mountain range for European standards, stretching for 1,200 km, from the Ligurian Alps in the northwest, to Reggio di Calabria in the southeast. This mountain range is divided into three parts, northern, central, and southern. The highest point of these mountains is 2,912 meters.
