For Carl this is justified, because to make an apple pie, you need to have ingredients. The ingredients were supplied by the work of the industries, the industries needed the agricultural products. Agricultural products needed a plant, the plant needed other things, it needed other things, and so on.

In this way we can confirm that Carl meant that everything in the universe is connected.
