It was during Shakespeare’s time that when a dramatic character speaks in poetry it speaks from his heart rather than in prose. Beatrice and Benedick spoke in prose to provide logic and substantiality in their arguments against each other. Benedick used witty prose to defend himself and Beatrice used prose to decrease her emotional appeal in her arguments.
