was the first state to ever secede (break away) from the Union. SC seceded after the election of President Lincoln because they did not agree with Lincoln's stand on slavery. Lincoln believed slavery should be stopped but the south did not agree with him. The south believed the election of Lincoln would interfere with their ability to keep slaves.
