He wanted to get a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, but because he was Catholic, he had to get special permission from the Pope. However, the Pop0e would not allow it, so Henry decided to go against the pope's word and create his own church (the church of england) that would allow him to divorce whoever he wanted.
