The Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AC in response to the great Jewish riot known as the First Jewish Revolt which began in 66 AC. The Great Jewish Rebellion began because of the <em>religious tensions between the Romans and the Jews</em>, initially as a minor conflict between smaller groups of Jews with the Romans, to escalate as a general rebellion and expulsion of the Romans. In response to a four-year insurrection, when the Jews took power in almost the entire country, the Roman Emperor Nero ordered the destruction of Jerusalem and Judea. Thus, the Romans in 70 AC destroyed Jerusalem, the Second Temple, and expelled most of the Jews from Jerusalem and Judea.
