Which part of this excerpt from “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift is directed against a particular social class in Ireland?

I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title to the children. Infant's flesh will be in season throughout the year, but more plentiful in March, and a little before and after; for we are told by a grave author, an eminent French physician, that fish being a prolifick dyet, there are more children born in Roman Catholick countries about nine months after Lent, the markets will be more glutted than usual, because the number of Popish infants, is at least three to one in this kingdom, and therefore it will have one other collateral advantage, by lessening the number of Papists among us

In "A Modest Proposal," Jonathan Swift uses irony to show the ridiculous nature of society, the imbalance of wealth and the hunger that it results in. It is a social statement using a most dramatic example: after listing the statistics, Swift weighs the options to solve this hunger, coming to the conclusion that the best option is to have poor couples produce young children to feed the rest of their families, or to sell to the rich in return for money enough to buy themselves food—that's right, he's talking about cannibalism (it's sarcasm, don't worry). In this particular excerpt, he addresses one of the contributors to the issue of hunger, landlords. When he says "landlords...have already devoured most of the parents," he is making commentary on how the price of land leaves little money for food when families are poor. The landlords are so greedy that they would rather have wealth and watch people starve than have less and aid families in need. However, landlords are everywhere, whereas the other social class that he criticizes populates much of Ireland: the Roman Catholics. Note that "Popish" and "Papists" are just other words that refer to Roman Catholics. He claims that during lent, a season meant for fasting and restraint, these hypocritical Catholics are celebrating and indulging in lust, producing children in a time where they, in respect to religious tradition, should not. He is a critic of society and of religion, and this excerpt,  he points out a flaw in the church, while cleverly tying it into his argument that people keep having children. He claims that increased population also increases hunger—when the demand for food increases, so does the price, making food harder to come by for impoverished people. When he says that "...it will have one other collateral advantage, by lessening the number of Papists among us," he means that he is relieved that with his plan, those Roman Catholic children will die, and not continue to populate society.

Answer:

C

Explanation:

A predicate is the part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject

Example: In this example, “Ivan” is the subject and “jumped” is the verb. “Jumped” is the predicate of the sentence. A predicate may also include additional modifiers with the verb that tell what the subject does. This is called a complete predicate.

Which of the following best describes how the author develops the connection between success and failure in the article?
likoan [24]

Most of us don’t fail or succeed in the glare of a national spotlight, much less do it thousands of times, with analysts endlessly critiquing every move. Perhaps that’s why people love sports: they provide a black and white analogy for the gray backdrop of life. The ball is in or it’s out, the basket is made or missed, the game is won or lost. Watching our favorite stars pull through when the chips are down inspires us to do the same in our own lives. And no one has inspired more sports fans, young and old alike, than Michael Jorda. The story of Michael Jordan not making his high school team has been told and retold, but continues to inspire with each retelling. In 1978, sophomore Michael Jordan tried out for the varsity basketball team at Laney High School. When the list was posted, Jordan’s name wasn’t on it. Instead, he was asked to play on the junior varsity team.

The reasoning behind the choice wasn’t that Jordan didn’t have enough talent or hadn’t already distinguished himself as an outstanding basketball player. Rather, it came down to seniority, size, and a strategic decision: The varsity team already had eleven seniors and three juniors. That left space for only one more player, and the coaches chose another sophomore, Jordan’s friend Leroy Smith. Smith was not as good as Jordan but he added size to the team, as he was 6’6” compared to Jordan’s diminutive 5’10”. What’s more, the coaches knew that if Jordan had been chosen for the varsity team, he would play only when needed as a substitute for the more senior varsity players. On the junior varsity team he would get more playing time and a chance to truly develop. It was a perfectly logical choice for the coaches to assign Jordan to the junior varsity team for his sophomore year. But 15-year-old Jordan was devastated when the list was posted without his name. In his mind, it was the ultimate defeat, the ultimate failure. “I went to my room and I closed the door and I cried. For a while I couldn’t stop. Even though there was no one else home at the time, I kept the door shut. It was important to me that no one hear me or see me.” Jordan was heartbroken and ready to give up the sport altogether until his mother convinced him otherwise.

I am sorry for being late 2 day but I hope it helps :)
