The society on the other hand can be affected in different ways by mass media, for society has different attributes. For instance we vary vastly from each other socially, politically,economically and even spiritually.

Mass media is the prime weapon of choice for all influencers that want to shape the society narrative to their whims. Political campaigns, for example, are a significantly obvious practice in American culture. And even in the personal light, we consume mass media for our information, entertainment, and education.

So it is safe to say that mass media does indeed have a massive role to play in the American society. However, it's validity is another question entirely.

I believe the answer is a simply because if you take one look on American society you can clearly see that people (of all genders) hold themselves to certain standards and are influenced by the media to an incredibly large extent.
