Minos is a legendary king of Crete and the son of gods Zeus and Europe. After his death, he became a judge of the dead in Hades, the Greek underworld.

In Dante's <em>Divine Comedy</em> Minos is encountered in Hell at the entrance of the second circle. Souls in Limbo, the first circle, are not to be judged as they have committed no sins. Minos is described as somewhat akin to an animal, growling and possessing a serpent tail. He, a demon, decides what the fate of a human soul is going to be by wrapping his tail around the its body a certain number of times, indicating what circle of hell it is going to reside in for the rest of eternity. Minos and other characters from mythology are there to teach Christian ethics. Dante shows that, if people commit many sins during their life, there will be no mercy for them in the afterlife.
