Metaphor is the application of a word in a manner departed from that word’s literal intent; the previous example is not a metaphor. If you say, however, “I must abdicate my role as class clown and prepare for final exams,” it is metaphorical because the application is congruent to but not within the bounds of the word’s standard usage.
