Could someone explain the causes and effects of the Spanish-American war?

Some causes of the Spanish-American war were that Cuba rebelled against Spain and America desired to protect its investments in Cuba. Some effects were the Americas prepared to fire on the Spanish ships, Cuba received independence, and men died while legendary figures emerged.
