Some causes of the Spanish-American war were that Cuba rebelled against Spain and America desired to protect its investments in Cuba. Some effects were the Americas prepared to fire on the Spanish ships, Cuba received independence, and men died while legendary figures emerged.

It could possible be ironic and problematic because the rest of the world was technically already "discovered", but just not by the Europeans specifically.
