The real meaning behind the euphemism AREAS ARE DEPOPULATED is the killing of animal population in the region regardless if they are wild or domesticated.
Depopulation is a procedure conducted when the animals are carriers of viruses, bacteria, or any dangerous pathogenic agents that may harm the human populace.

The part that caught my attention was where the student said, “I don’t think Ravi felt isolated. I think he was bored, and he didn’t think the game was very interesting. Like he wanted to hide so that he didn’t have to play, and he could just chill and wait it out.”

I think the student misinterpreted the story and its message. It’s quite clear that Ravi wanted to play with his friends or else he would have stayed indoors to escape the intolerable heat.
