The "new South" was something that Henry Grady, the editor of the Atlanta Constitution, tried to create because of his enthusiasm for the success of the South. The railroad lines were not in the favor for the southerners. Many of the lines that helped transport manufactured goods around the Nation did go south of the North, but in the opposite direction of where many of the raw materials made in the South came from.
