   A republic is a state in which preeminent power is held by the general population and their chose delegates, and which has a chosen or named president as opposed to a ruler. In Revolutionary France, the Legislative Assembly votes to annul the government and set up the First Republic. The measure came one year in the wake of King Louis XVI reluctantly affirmed another constitution that stripped him of quite a bit of his energy.</span>
