When U.S. Secretary William Henry Seward signed a treaty with Russia to purchase Alaska for $ 7 Million, it was critically ridiculed in the Congress. The press termed his act as "Seward's Folly" as Alaska was only one fifth of the area of the United States and seemed worthless to purchase.

But Henry William wanted to add Alaska as a part of the United States. Although the decision wasn't appreciated initially, but later proved to be worth as Alaska was rich in natural resources and contributed to the American prosperity a lot.
