In the preamble of the Constitution, the principle which is best expressed is that we are a country run by the people. We are not ruled by a monarch, an aristocracy, and a select few people. The American citizens have the ability to govern themselves and elect representatives that best reflect their views.

Founded by Alexander the Great, 332 BC. was an important center of Helenistic civilization, and was the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt, then the Roman and Byzantine Egypt, until the arrival of the Muslims, when the capital moved to Cairo.  Alexandria was not a city-state, since it was founded at the time of the great Hellenistic Empire. Democracy already existed before that. What makes this city famous is a great lighthouse one of the world's seven wonders of the ancient world, as well as the largest library of the ancient world. At that time it was one of the most powerful cities of the Mediterranean with diverse population, thanks to the port state and the trade that took place there.
