When this takes place the intrusive igneous rock is called a sill.  A good example is the Palisades Sill in New York State near the Hudson's River which is a prominent cliff-former and is intruded into the surrounding sedimentary rock parallel to the layers. It's composition is approximately that of a basalt. Its' age is Triassic, or about 200 million years old.
