In the 1950's and 1960's it was a time of considerable prosperity and the standard of living improved for many Americans. Also, demographically, the baby-boomers or a large increase in births from the troops coming home had a big influence on life in the US. Many of these youth developed a counter-culture and also took part in demonstrations against the war in Vietnam and the civil rights movement.
