Some republicans agreed with Johnson, some wanted the readmission of all the southern states AND the Freedmen Act. The radical republicans saw the southern states as conquered territory, and wanted to reform the laws so that African-Americans had equal rights. This group of republicans was led by Thaddeus " Old Thad " Stevens. Johnson called these republicans " The Directory " which refered to the tyrannical republican government in France, first founded after their revolution. It was led by Maximellian Robespierre.
