If the word is very harsh such as “idiot, a*shole, b*tch, hate, etc” it can hurt other people’s feelings and can effect them in multiple ways. some ways are very negative such as self harm, depression, anxiety, very low self esteem, etc. words have a lot of effects on others depending on how they take it.
