This scene is the part where he suddenly notices the strong points of Elizabeth. When he first came to Hertfordshire, he did not acknowledge Elizabeth Bennett at all. Bingley was even encouraging Mr. Darcy to dance with Elizabeth in the first gathering and he refused. It was only till the second assembly with Colonel Foster did he really start looking at her.
