Remember that in figurative language, figures of speech are used in order to have a deeper impact or effect on the reader. Those figures of speech can be employed to provide the text with a deeper meaning, not only the literal one. In this case methapors, similes, and allusions would be chosen. They can also be use to make an effect on the reader's senses, in this case the author would chose alliterations, imageries, or onomatopoeia.

In this case the writer uses the phrase "she was a fountain". This phrase is commonly used to decribe somebody that is crying profusely as they squirt water like one. This is a metaphor as it compares in an implicit way two things that seem unrelated but have something in common.
