In passive listening, the listener's attention is not fully directed to what is being said. It's the sort of listening we do when we listen to music while focused in other tasks, such as studying or cleaning the house. When you listen to someone passively, you may grasp some part of what is being said to you, but not the details. The main message might be lost.

In active listening, the listener is mindful of what is being said. Not only he/she is listening to every word, but also processing the information, learning something from it and forming his/her own opinion. The listener also offers feedback by reacting, demonstrating somehow that their attention is engaged, maybe by making comments or simply by moving their heads. If friends are talking to you about the latest trends, the best thing to do is to actively listen to them; offer some insight as well, take in the information they offer, and make sure they feel like their words matter.
