Current understanding of the settlement of the Americas derives from advances in four interrelated disciplines: archaeology, Pleistocene geology, physical anthropology, and DNA analysis. While there is general agreement that the Americas were first settled from Asia, the pattern of migration, its timing, and the place(s) of origin in Asia of the peoples who migrated to the Americas remain unclear.[1] In the 2000s, researchers sought to use familiar tools to validate or reject established theories, such as Clovis first.[2] The archeological evidence suggests that the Paleo-Indians' first dispersal into the Americas occurred near the end of the last glacial period or, more specifically, what is known as the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), around 16,500–13,000 years ago.[1]

The settlement of the Americas is of intense interest to archaeologists and anthropologists. Modern biochemical techniques, as well as the accumulation of archaeological and geological evidence, have shed progressively more light on the subject; however, significant questions remain unresolved.<span>[3]</span>

In many ways, the founding of America represented a radical shift in the course of history. Drawing upon classical principles of democracy in ancient Greece and republic in ancient Rome, the founders of America outlined an ideal of government defined by equality and freedom. This is evident in the Declaration of Independence, which states that "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." The constitution later outlines the specific framework and goal of American government, noting that "in Order to form a more perfect Union. establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States." This gives us considerable insight into the initial goals and ideals of America: freedom, liberty, justice, tranquility,and equality. These frameworks also tell us that the founders intended rights to help secure these principles.

The problem with these ideals at the time they were written is that they did not describe the society that was immediately created by these words. Although the words of the founding outlined equality, slavery was still a massive and profitable industry in early America. Another radical ideas of America's founding-- that the people themselves should get a say in governance which would then help secure their rights--was also severely limited to the realm of white men. Women, people of color, and other disadvantaged groups were summarily excluded from democracy.

While this might imply that we should be pessimistic about how American democracy is able to live up to its goals, we should, however, consider the whole span of American history. Although the founding principles of America may be incredibly lofty--so high that they may never be fully realized--America's democracy and the ability of the people to shape government has throughout history helped expand the rights and freedoms for many groups. So while these ideals may never be a lived ideal, democracy gives us a real mechanism to work towards even the loftiest goals of freedom, equality, and liberty for all.

The Spanish mission system was set since 1568 and it ended in 1684. Mainly handled by the Franciscan order, the missions settled mostly on the lands that belong today to Florida and Georgia. Their intent was to evangelize the Indian tribes of the region and also adapt them to what the Spanish considered more civilized lifestyles.

Initially, these missions were pretty successful, and it was actually the chiefs of the Native American villages who requested missions to be sent to their lands from the Spanish Crown. However, the system that was established by the Spanish, of drafting young males of marriage-age to work as subordinates, put Indian tribes in difficult situations that finally led to the end of the system.

The first two factors that led to the collapse of the mission system that spread throughout Florida and Georgia, were the exposure to disease of these young men and the resettlement of the tribal people. Between 1656 and 1657, the decimation of the population due to disease, along with the forced resettlement of tribes, became factors that helped to end the mission system.

However, one of the biggest factors that led to the end of the missions was the alliance that began to form between Indian tribes and English raiders and pirates. By 1685, most missions had already retreated towards the barrier islands. It was a pirate raid that took place in 1684, that finally ended the whole missionary attempt of the Spanish.
