On August 6, 1945, during World War II, an American B-29 bomber dropped the world's first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure.

If it was the mainland states it took 305 years for it to be settled.  The Western frontier took 137 years for it to be finally settled.  At first there were  a lot of restrictions but due to the discovery of gold and unclaimed land available, people flocked in large numbers to settle into this new frontier to have a better life.
