In terms of the 3 branches of government, the Judicial branch/judges dont apply the law but instead interpret whether the law is constitutional. The legislative branch writes the law and the executive branch enforces the law.

The main job of supreme court is to make sure the laws written or any challenges to a law are constitutional. If a judge comes across a law that they personally do not like but is constitutionally sound, they must rule for the law as it is their job

Pressure, how to interpret a law, "there's more than one way to skin a cat", different people/judges will interpret teh same law differently hence why 7-0 rulings are uncommon. and their ruling must have a constitutional basis/reason. Best part would probably be the job security
