The reason why the West formed NATO is because of the threat of a rising Soviet Union during the Cold War. It was also a response to the East's Warsaw Pact. It's like NATO only Communist. And another reason why they joined NATO is to defend each other in case of invasion or attack. Like "You hit my friend you hit all of us."
