Mainly the hinge joint is composed of three or more bones with an articular exterior that is enclosed by lubricated by synovial fluid and hyaline cartilage. Each hinge joint is stable by ligaments, muscles, and connective tissue known as joint capsules.

The hinge joint is an important part of the biomechanics of the body. They allow extension and flexion in one plane with a small degree of movement in other planes.
