According to Article II of the United States Constitution, the President is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, grant pardons as well as reprives for federal offenses, receive ambassadors and conduct diplomacy, write executive orders, direct the executive branch, and appoint the officials of his cabinet.

To declare war, he needs the approval of Congress. To pass legislation, he works with Congress.
