It's been awhile since I read the book, but I recall that there was a conversation between, I think, PonyBoy and Bob. It was PonyBoy and a Soc at any rate. I also thought it showed conformity by showing how vastly different the Soc was without his friends around. When you get one of either gang alone, they're nothing like the gang as a whole. So it highlights both the individual and the conformity
