Karana doesn't have any lights the first winter, because she wasn't able to go and gather smelts, since the Aleuts took all of her abalone. She used the small fish to use as a type of kindling to start fires. Without them she wasn't able to find enough dry matter to make light.

Karana did not have lights during the first winter after the abandonment of the island by the Aleuts, this is because she lived in caves and needed small flashlights and did not have the possibility of acquiring other types of lights. During that period he did not have great illumination but he did get enough light to live.

"Do you think there is any relationship between sanity and intelligence or cleverness? Why or why not?"
elixir [45]
If this is asking for a personal opinion, then no. I do not believe there is any relationship or connection between sanity and intelligence because someone’s mental state or background doesn’t define their intelligence or thinking patterns. Some studies done over mental disorders such as BPD (borderline personality disorder) have found sufferers to be more intelligent and, ironically speaking, happier than the average person.

Sliva [168]
I'm not exactly sure, but I think this statement is true, although the antagonist can sometimes be a rival to the protagonist without knowing. It really depends.
