Explanation:

Enemies for life, both characters and their families had been fighting over a piece of land for decades. In the particular night of the events, Von Gradwitz and Znaeym stand facing each other on what it will prove to be the final showdown. Ironically, the two men end up trapped after a branch is hit by lightning. This specific event develops a type of communication between the two sworn enemies who, at the beginning, seem reluctant, yet end up accepting that their quarrel is banal and inconsistent.
