The correct answer is to this question is C) In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the U.S. government passed restrictions on immigration from Northern and Western Europe.

In colonial times, The United States suffered from a big amount of immigration. Basically, at the beginning of the 19th century, immigrants came to the U.S. looking for a better job. In the 17th to 19th centuries, many African slaves arrived in U.S. territory. It was until 1882 that the U.S. enacted a significant federal law limiting immigration: the Chinese Exclusion Act. In 1892, Ellis Island was the first federal immigration office in America.

In 1907, there was an increase in immigration. Although, legally. numbers reflect that 1.3 million people entered the country. That is why in 1917, Congress demanded immigrants over 16 years-old, to pass a test.

The other options of the question are A) During the 1800s, there was a decrease in the industrial world and fewer job opportunities in the US. B) In the late 1800, immigration laws were more lenient than the ones passed in the 1900s.
