The goal of the Homestead Act was to encourage citizens to move to new territories/states gained by the US government during the era of westward expansion. This law allowed thousands of Americans to move to different regions (like the midwest) in order to create new homes/farms. The cheap land provided by the federal government enticed many citizens, as it allowed them to own a home and have a huge farm rather than living in a cramped or crowded city.
