The correct answer should be Salt. They had a lot of salt and salt was accepted even as currency because it was rare and often it was worth more than even gold. It was accepted everywhere unlike gold that was mostly useless other than for things like jewellery. Salt was needed everywhere and Mali had a lot of it.
