During world war 2, the civilians were called partisans
Partisans were something like rebels or freedom fighters in areas conquered by Germany. The term stuck and was used a lot to describe especially those fighters from the Balkans area where partisans who were communists fought against Italians and Germans and later became even more important when the war ended.
One of the successes of the Reconstruction era was the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth amendments.
