Describe the impact of the ethnic conflict in the Balkans in the early 1990s.
kirill115 [55]

The impact of the ethnic conflict in the Balkans was that over 100,000 people were killed and 1 million people displaced from their homes during this conflict. Refugees flooded neighboring European countries and the European Union, and NATO sent peacekeeping troops to the region to prevent the conflict from restarting.

Explanation:

The Balkan in the early 1990's was the most unstable part of Europe. Yugoslavia was coming by its end, and several extreme nationalist parties, mainly from Serbia and Croatia were gradually lifting up the tensions. As it was clear that Yugoslavia will fall apart, the largest federate states wanted to get as much as possible from the territory, with Serbia even wanting to occupy some of the other federate states and form a large Serbian country.

As the countries started to proclaim independence, Slovenia leading the pack, the first military offensive started between Slovenia and Serbia. Than the battle moved on in Bosnia, with the Serbians, Croatians, and Bosnian Muslims fighting against each other, resulting in several massacres and genocides. Only Macedonia managed to get out of Yugoslavia without military conflict, though it was under threat of it.

The end result was large scale destruction, thousands of people murdered, and huge migration wave toward Western Europe and the Nordic countries.

Out of the former Yugoslavia, several nations have been formed, some earlier, some later:

  • Serbia
  • Croatia
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Macedonia
  • Slovenia
  • Montenegro
  • Kosovo (not recognized by UN)
