Following the arrival of white settlers in the Pacific Northwest, the United States pressured the local Native Americans to give up their lands and accept relocation on small, frequently unappealing reserves. Because the leaders involved in the negotiations did not speak for their tribe, certain Nez Perce chiefs, including Chief Joseph's father, questioned the legality of the treaties that dealt with their territories and were made in 1855 and 1863.
