One of the objectives of The Divine Comedy is to push people into fearing what awaits in hell, so they would stay away from sin as mush as they can. Dante is a representation of how humanity's faith on hell had faded over the years to the time the story took place at, and what the people will be able to witness - and most likely endure - should they continue to live in sin.
