Why does the food aid from the United States hurt the Haitian economy and what does it force Haitian farmers to do?
77julia77 [94]

Answer:

"There is a risk, definitely. And we are very aware of that," says Brooke Isham, director of the Food for Peace program at the US Agency for International Development (USAID). "And that is why we are always looking at the impact of food aid on local markets and whether it is depressing prices in local markets."

USAID, the UN World Food Program (WFP) and others monitor markets regularly. Etienne Labonde, head of WFP's program in Haiti, says, as of March, food aid did not cause major disruptions in Haiti's economy. "Maybe it's an impression, but it's not the facts at the moment," he says.

Low prices can lead Haiti's farmers to store rice rather than sell it at a loss.

Whether impression or fact, Haitian President Rene Preval raised the issue when he came to Washington last month. He said food aid was indispensible right after the earthquake. But, "If we continue to send food and water from abroad," he said, "it will compete with national production of Haiti and with Haitian trade."

Gnaeus Pompey did not originally wish to join the First Triumvirate. What caused him to change his mind?
poizon [28]

Answer:

  • Land for his soldiers
  • Settlement of a Roman territory.

Explanation:

Pompey had prestige in Rome but he also faced a lot of opposition in the Senate from nobles when he tried to get them to give him land for his soldiers as well as to approve settlement of a Roman territory to the east.

When he saw that he would not manage on his own, he turned to Caesar who already had Crassus on his side. Together they formed the First Triumvirate and Caesar pushed through Pompey's request for land.

Before the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), health insurance companies would refuse to sell insurance policies to Americans who
Rashid [163]

This is in my opinion one of the aspects that makes the central courts and the different lines of thought within a single subject so interesting. The clash of ideas that we have in this case is a perfect example.

  • On one side we have those who look at the current 30 million uninsured Americans, which include millions in Texas, and the undeniable success it had in Massachusetts. Most of them conclude that this mandate is a government success.
  • On the other hand, we can find those who believe that this is a terrible invasion of the government to the citizen's free will to choose their own healthcare options, they see government overreach, and at the same time an unprecedented intrusion on individual liberties to which there is no justification.

Unfortunately this is something that millions of Americans have been forced into. It's evident how they refused to create a public health care system, and instead give more power to the private sector.

After this short debate of ideas, I will give you one question to ponder on: Which principle is more important? Your freedom, your civil liberties, and your freedom from the government line of thought, or the possibilty of providing health care to millions of uninsured Americans?

I hope this solves your question!

Happy 2019! :)
