The frist one is Germany was already teetering, an effective blockade had reduced some of the population to the verge of starvation, although troops had been released by the end of the war against Russia there was little prospect of victory. It was not the troops on the ground as much as it was the prospect of thousands more arriving every day that demoralised the Germans.
