The term Bantu refers to any individual belonging to the more than 400 ethnic groups of Melano-African peoples, who speak Bantu languages, and who live south of a line running from Douala (Cameroon) to the mouth of the Yuba (Somalia). They do not understand a racial type or a uniform culture. Their beliefs are, for the most part, animistic, except those of Christianized or Islamized groups. It is believed that the peoples who spoke Bantu languages had easily imposed themselves on other less technologically organized peoples since they were equipped with iron weapons and practiced intensive agriculture .
