An independent clause can stand on its own - it does not have to be supplemented with other elements of a sentence in order for it to exist, unlike with a dependent clause, which cannot exist on its own. Here, the independent clause is What would happen if love didn't die?, whereas the dependent clause is <em>if the poem is about going mad when love is lost.</em>
