The correct answer is D) a person accused of a crime has the right to an attorney.

<em>The American legal practice that did not come from the Roman Law of Nations is "a person accused of a crime has the right to an attorney."</em>

The Roman Law of Nations was a series of traditional laws followed by people in Rome through tradition. The Romans developed this system to be applied in all cases with Roman citizens and foreigners in case of a dispute. So many Europeans nations followed that customary law for their countries and the new territories that were conquered. But the American legal practice that did not come from the Roman Law of Nations is "a person accused of a crime has the right to an attorney."

The Virginia Resolves declared the principle of "no taxation without representation".  The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament to help pay for the French and Indian War.  American colonists were affected by these taxes as part of the British empire.  In the Virginia Resolves, Virginians protested the Stamp Act, and argued that they should not have to pay taxes to the British government when they did not have representatives in Parliament to speak for them.  Hence, the phrase "no taxation with representation" became a key principle in the colonists' struggle for independence.

Once the Civil War was over, President Lincoln did not intend to punish the South. He felt everyone had suffered enough. He wanted to help the South, and the whole country, rebuild. The process of rebuilding the country following the Civil War was called Reconstruction. The official surrender by General Lee to General Grant occurred at Appomattox Court House, and the terms were generous to the South. The terms of surrender said that the Southern soldiers could go home and would not be prosecuted for treason. It also said that they must surrender their guns, but could keep their horses. Officers were allowed to keep their sidearms.  In order to make the achievements of the war permanent, three amendments were added to the U.S. Constitution.
