We couldn't be where we are without microscopes and other technology. We couldn't study almost anything we know without these modern inventions.

They make tests and observations more accurate. Hundreds of years ago a theory wasn't as easy to prove as it is now, and even most of those that were "proven" to be true have been disproven in recent years.

I like to think of taxonomic categories as filters/sieves. If you put your animals through the Kingdom filter, then all the animals are in that category. if you have a finer sieve, then less animals get through, this goes down all the way to the most specific which is Species.
