James Monroe was elected in 1816 and in 1823 made a declaration that the USA would not tolerate interventions by Europeans in the affairs of nations in the Americas. This doctrine was known as "America for the Americans". We have to remember that Monroe was the fifth president and the USA had cut links with Britain not long ago.
